We continue our vote of confidence for back-up power by addressing some more burning questions around the duration a system can run for, installation and maintenance.

What is the importance of sizing the system?
Backup time is largely determined by the size of the connected battery bank and the load drawn from the system – they are directly proportionate. Backup time is typically calculated at full load, so if a system is 2200W, full load will then be 2200W. If you choose to remove some of the connected load, then back-up time is extended.
Will the system last for the full duration of load shedding?
Yes. Again, sizing a system correctly is integral to ensuring you get the right amount of power supply, for as long as is required. Depending on the type of battery and the battery’s capacity, back-up power systems are typically capable of supplying power for durations of up to 6 hours. Most systems can even accommodate two bouts of load shedding in a day – again, this is dependent on the type and capacity of the battery, and whether or not there is sufficient time to recharge between load shedding.
How long will it take for batteries to fully charge?
The duration required for a battery to reach full charge depends on the type of battery and its capacity. Recharge time is also dependent on how much power was removed from the batteries during load shedding or power failures.

What installation option is preferable?
Some smaller back-up power systems can either be used as stand-alone systems, or they can be wired into a DB board.
Larger systems can also be used as stand-alone systems, however, it is preferable to rather hard-wire them into a DB board.
What maintenance is required for a system?
Fortunately, most systems require a minimum amount of maintenance. Batteries that are ether semi-sealed lead calcium or fully-sealed gel batteries are generally maintenance free and do not have to be refilled. We recommend that battery sets be installed in a battery cabinet, and placed in a room with adequate ventilation. It is important to note that as with all types of batteries, they can be hazardous when tampered with.
