MEC visits Magnet!

Mr Michael Mabuyakhulu, KZN MEC for Economic development, Tourism and Environmental affairs, unveilled the Plaque to mark the Official Opening of Magnet's new Head Office. The event was attended by Magnet Directors and staff, who greeted Mr Mabuyakhulu with the National Anthem in commemoration of the first anniversary of Madiba's death.

After hearty discussions on the current state of the Country's economy, and Magnet's impact on social development, the MEC was directed to the entrance of the building where he said a few words in support of the opening of Magnet and the unveilling of the Plaque. Magnet's Managing Director, Mr Brian Howarth, then presented the MEC with four solar street lights for use in an underpriveledged community of his choosing.

SA Power System Protection Conference

Every other year, Eskom organises a Power System Protection conference, which Magnet proudly participates in. This year, the conference was held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, between 12 - 14 November. The conference played host to almost 500 delegates from across Southern Africa, and provided a forum for discussions centred on the power protection industry.

Going Green in 2014!

“Going green”, a term come to popularity in recent years, is not as difficult a transition as one would imagine. Instead, there are a few minor adjustments you could make to everyday life that would make a world of a difference…literally. Here are some handy tips:

  • Recycle – Recycling, something that cannot be stressed more, is a valuable contribution to the welfare of the environment. Did you know that glass can take up to one million years to decompose if incorrectly disposed? Divide your household garbage by type – glass, plastic, paper, etc. This makes it easier to recycle.
  • Save energy – New Compact fluorescent light (CFL) and LED bulbs use less energy than the standard light bulbs. Moreover, we all know to turn off the lights when we leave a room, yet why do we still not do it? Has it become so much a part of our natural way of doing things that we don’t even realise our actions have dire consequences? Also, remember to switch off plug points when they are not in use. Make a conscious effort to change these terrible habits, and you will be more than grateful when your next electricity bill arrives!
  • Save petrol – Always check tyre pressure. Driving with low tyre pressure increases fuel consumption. Furthermore, rolling in neutral to save petrol is a myth! A car uses petrol according to the gear it’s in, first being the gear where the most petrol is used, as such, fast starts and breaks should be avoided.
  • Save water – Remember to keep taps running only when you really have to. Switch to showers, they are a sure way to decrease water usage when compared to baths. Also, consider the option of changing your old toilet cistern – it uses at least double the amount of water per flush in comparison to the new cisterns.

Going green is a concept that can also be extended to the workplace. For tips on how to “go green” at the office, follow this link: www.drivesouthafrica.co.za/blog/30-ways-to-go-green-office
