Mr Michael Mabuyakhulu, KZN MEC for Economic development, Tourism and Environmental affairs, unveilled the Plaque to mark the Official Opening of Magnet's new Head Office. The event was attended by Magnet Directors and staff, who greeted Mr Mabuyakhulu with the National Anthem in commemoration of the first anniversary of Madiba's death.

After hearty discussions on the current state of the Country's economy, and Magnet's impact on social development, the MEC was directed to the entrance of the building where he said a few words in support of the opening of Magnet and the unveilling of the Plaque. Magnet's Managing Director, Mr Brian Howarth, then presented the MEC with four solar street lights for use in an underpriveledged community of his choosing.

Mr Mabuyakhulu ended off his visit with an expression of his gratitude for Magnet's donation, and he wished the Group all of the very best going forward.

Every other year, Eskom organises a Power System Protection conference, which Magnet proudly participates in. This year, the conference was held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng, between 12 - 14 November. The conference played host to almost 500 delegates from across Southern Africa, and provided a forum for discussions centred on the power protection industry.
Together with A.Eberle, Magnet's stand displayed products and solutions for earth fault detection, power grid stability and voltage regulation, to name a few.
The conference was an absolute success, and most informative. Magnet looks forward to participating in the 2016 conference, which Eskom promises to be just as well-supported by related industries within Southern Africa.

Magnet - specialists in the supply, implementation and support of electrical equipment, industrial instrumentation and automation – has recently received another etaAward: Innovation Category runner up.
The award has been won for the development of an innovative lighting solution, 100% locally designed and manufactured, called Lite-C. Product developer and Magnet Technical Director, Stephan Allen, is very proud of this achievement, and looks forward to the opportunities that lie in store for this brilliant product.
Magnet recently participated in a corporate social initiative project which saw staff planting veggies to sustain a local soup kitchen.
Magnet has previously been involved in other charity initiatives organised by Angel Projects, such as the crèche which we painted and supplied stationery to last year.
Magnet proudly supports community development projects under the "Magnet Outreach Programme", and we look forward to more in the year ahead.
Magnet - specialists in the supply, implementation and support of electrical equipment, industrial instrumentation and automation – has officially opened its new environmentally-friendly head office in Riverhorse Valley, Durban.
Guest of honour at the event, Dr Musa Gumede, Deputy City Manager: Community and Emergency Services, unveiled the plaque to mark the official opening of the new building. In his address, Dr Gumede commended Magnet on its brilliant achievement and contribution to the economy. He went on to express his appreciation for Magnet’s involvement in community upliftment, with respect to its multiple enterprise development initiatives.
All six Magnet companies and divisions - Magnet Electrical, Magnet Projects, Magnet Automation, Magnet I.T, Magnet Panels & Field Services and Magnol Electrical are based at these new premises, which have at least 50% more space capacity for expected growth and expansion than the previous offices in Umbilo.
The new building also encompasses an interactive showroom, exhibiting the company’s extensive range of products and services.
Overall, the event was a roaring success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.

Energywise Systems, in co-operation with Magnet, has recently established a specialist lighting service laboratory in Riverhorse Valley, Durban, which offers complete photometric, electric and thermal testing of light sources and luminaires.
“The Energywise Systems lighting laboratory team is committed to achieving the highest levels of accuracy in every aspect of lighting, including design and manufacture,” says Andrea Barausse, managing director, Energywise Systems. “Precise analysis and defined performance parameters during laboratory testing ensure absolute efficiency and project optimisation. Our highly skilled technicians are also involved in research into the latest light sources and reflective and diffusion materials."
With the investment in the latest photometric equipment and ongoing technical training for the laboratory team, Energywise now offers industry a comprehensive testing service for locally developed and imported light fittings. The company offers the full set of IES and LTD photometric files for lighting computer simulation and thermal analysis, with relative performance for those products exposed to challenging temperature conditions. Lab service and equipment is available from Energywise for hire or purchase.

Wolman's recently moved their premises within the prestigious La Lucia mall. Owner, Mr J vd Merwe identified the opportunity to save energy whilst improving on illumination levels. He then called on Magnet and, by using the ML-PL-SBT 60W LED panel luminaire to replace the installed T8 LBR technology, a saving of 56% was achieved.

Using a colour temperature of 4000 kelvin ensures that the colour appearance of leather goods and plastics are true, something that is often overlooked. An overall improvement of 90% in lux levels was achieved whilst uniformity levels proved above 0.8.

Magnet's popular charity initiative "Tin Tuesday" resumed in May. Magnet donated 132 tins to Saint Giles, a non-profit organisation that seeks to support persons with various disabilities via programmes such as the Remedial Gymnasium and the Work Centre. At the Work Centre, disabled persons sort, pack and assemble products, such as spices and herbs. Saint Giles also runs a charity shop, which sells second-hand donated goods. Since the official ground breaking ceremony in June earlier this year, construction on Magnet's new head office in River Horse Valley is well underway. "As we head into the rainy season some delays on construction can be expected, however, with steady progress the building will be ready in good time ahead of our move next year", says Brian Howarth, Magnet MD. Magnet recently travelled back to Amaoti Township to host a Christmas party for the kids of Goodness from God crèche. Under the Magnet Outreach Programme, the children were supplied with food parcels and gift hampers.
The children were also treated to a lunch, while Magnet staff decorated classrooms with furniture, posters and much more! This party was organized in conjunction with Angel Projects. Spokesperson for the organization, Werda Grunewald, was pleased to report that " Nellie, the owner of the crèche, was totally overwhelmed and greatly appreciates Magnet's generosity".
We look forward to the new year and the numerous projects in the pipeline for the Magnet Outreach Programme.
The Magnet Group of Companies recently traveled down south to the lovely Selborne Hotel, Spa and Golf Estate for a team-building weekend away. Just under 100 staff members participated in various challenges and activities in an effort to bond with co-workers and strengthen group cohesion.
The weekend also included the annual Magnet Awards ceremony wherein staff were acknowledged for outstanding achievements made over the year.
The staff thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, and eagerly await next years' team-building trip!
The Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) recently hosted its 8th annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony at Emperor's Palace, Gauteng. Stephan Allen, Magnet's Technical Director, walked away with the much sought-after SAEE Energy Project of the Year Award. This award was won for an energy efficiency project completed at UniLever's Distribution Centre in Jozi Park, Boksburg. The project made use of a programmable lighting control system, able to detect movement within the isles of the DC, utilizing a Radio Frequency Communication System to control the entire lighting network - a FIRST in the country! Magnet is extremely proud of this achievement, and would like to convey our congratulations to all the other SAEE Award winners.
On the evening of 27 October 2012, Magnet hosted close to 300 clients and esteemed guests at Moses Mabhida Stadium in celebration of our 40th birthday. Guests were treated to welcome drinks and canapés upon arrival, as well as some thrilling entertainment in the form of a photo booth, the musical stylings of jazz band Beat-Route, and the enticing showmanship of magician Mo Magic, who mingled with guests and performed various tricks and illusions. The photo booth proved to be great fun and an extraordinary ice breaker as guests were encouraged to indulge in the props provided, which made for some pretty interesting pictures!
Once all the guests had arrived, they were invited into the main room where they were seated for the formalities of the evening. The décor was stylish and elegant, with a hint of glamour.
Led by MC Wesley Cruikshanks of East Coast Radio, the evening included several video clips of clients and staff, as well as an address from Magnet’s MD, Brian Howarth. After a delectable three-course dinner, guests were treated to an on-stage performance by Mo Magic, who once again outdid himself.
The evening came to a close with the unveiling of Magnet’s 40th Birthday Memorabilia Book, which tells of how Magnet came to be and includes pictures of the staff over the 40 years.
This birthday extravaganza was a huge success and a brilliant way to celebrate Magnet’s 40 years of business. We look forward to the next 40 years and promise that we have much in store for our clients!
