Magnet teams up with the KZN Blind Society
Members from the KZN Society for the Blind in Durban are assisting Magnet with its current Eskom project – a joint initiative to save energy through the use of energy saving showerheads and water restrictors for taps.

“We are pleased to be able to provide employment to members of the Society for the Blind. The team has already prepared over 8 000 energy saving devices for installation,” says Brian Howarth, managing director, Magnet. “Tasks include fitting showerheads with energy saving devices and labelling and packaging these units, ready for delivery and installation throughout the country.”
Magnet, in partnership with Energywise, has been contracted by Eskom to assemble, distribute and install new energy saving showerheads to organisations with multiple shower facilities, at no cost to approved applicants. This venture will ensure significant reductions in water and electricity consumption in diverse sectors, including mining, industrial, Government, educational, corporate and commercial environments.
Conventional vs Energy Saving – Showerhead Exchange
Magnet held a “Showerhead Exchange” day at their Durban premises. Magnet staff came to work with their conventional showerheads (from home) and exchanged them for new energy saving showerheads. These Energywise energy saving showerheads will maintain a pleasurable shower flow rate, however they use less water per minute resulting in electricity and water savings.

Energy Saving Showerhead Rollout
“Magnet, in partnership with Energywise, has been contracted by Eskom to distribute and install new energy saving showerheads to organisations with multiple shower facilities, at no cost to approved applicants,” says Brian Howarth, managing director, Magnet.
“This energy saving programme, which is aimed at organisations through the country in sectors that include mining, industrial, Government, educational, corporate and commercial sectors, is expected to save 330 Gigawatt hours of energy over three years. This is energy equivalent to that of lighting up to 12 500 km’s of road and water savings equivalent to filling up 160 home swimming pools every day.
“The benefit of participating in this venture is significant reductions in water and electricity accounts.
“This project involves an audit by Magnet of each successful applicant. Existing showerheads will be removed and replaced with low flow showerheads. A measurement and verification team from the University of Stellenbosch will conduct audits to verify energy savings.
“This contract means Eskom will pay the contracted company for kWh savings over a period of three years, with no costs for the user for the removal of existing inefficient showerheads and installation of new fittings.”
Conventional showers use an average of 125 litres of water, of which 60% is hot water. With the installation of Energywise showerheads, users can save up to 50% of electricity consumed to heat water.
An important feature of these low flow showerheads is they are easily fitted to an existing heat pump or solar system installation to enhance efficiency of the system. These energy saving showerheads are of high quality and ensure a maximum comfort level of the shower, even though the showerhead is using less water and electricity. These showerheads are also available in a vandal resistant design to prevent theft.
These energy efficient showerheads deliver between nine and 10 litres of water per minute, irrespective of the supply pressure. An additional opportunity to save hot water is to install tap restrictors, which deliver between three and six litres of water per minute and are easily fitted to existing taps.
Through this initiative, large organisations can also offer staff the opportunity to reduce water and electricity bills at home.
Magnet and Energywise welcome participation in this project by users of multi shower facilities.

DOUBLE-WHAMMY AWARD FOR MAGNET / ENERGYWISE
Johannesburg, 16 November 2011: The SAEE Energy Company of the Year Award was presented to KwaZulu-Natal company, Magnet Electrical Supplies / Energywise Systems, at the Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency’s (SAEE) Awards Ceremony.
The Awards Ceremony formed part of the official annual SAEE Banquet which marked the opening of the 6th Southern African Energy Efficiency Convention (SAEEC2011) and Exhibition on the 16th of November 2011, held at Emperors Palace, Gauteng. Not only did Magnet / Energywise shine as Energy Company of the Year, but was also awarded the Best Single Exhibition Stand of the SAEEC2011, for its interactive hands-on display of water and energy saving devices.
World-wide greenwashing has become a common problem which places the development of the energy efficiency sector at risk; end-users are exposed to negative experiences with energy inefficient products which are sold as ‘green’ items. Owner of Energywise Systems, Andrea Barausse, identified a need to make tried-and-tested products available to the South African market. Over the past 4 years he has become well-known for his relentless passion in investigating water and energy saving devices and has executed practical experiments in his laboratory to find products that deliver optimal energy and water savings. Together with Magnet Electrical Supplies, Energywise Systems is listed on the Eskom IDM website as the authorised supplier of 16 different energy efficient showerheads. This collaboration, together with a reputation for providing reliable and efficient products to the residential and commercial markets in South Africa, has afforded the team a performance contract with Eskom for the largest showerhead roll-out in the country to date. This initiative is projected to reduce the demand for energy from the national grid by a whopping 330 GWh, or 110 GWh a year. “With such a contribution to the future sustainability of South Africa’s energy supply, Magnet Electrical Supplies / Energywise Systems are worthy winners of the Energy Company of the Year Award”, said Prof LJ Grobler, President of the SAEE.
Prof Grobler reiterates the importance of such projects so that energy efficiency targets for the country can be met, and the grid’s future sustainability can be enhanced. “This year we had a number of entrants that were exceptional for the Annual SAEE Energy Awards Programme. The projects had very good returns and demonstrated that energy efficiency does make good business sense”, continued Grobler. Companies are encouraged to enter their projects to enhance the positive initiatives that materialise in the country.
SAEEC2011 featured over 80 knowledgeable speakers, 50 varied exhibition stands on the latest and most interesting developments in the energy efficiency industry and 500 niche market delegates. Energywise Systems had a very educational inter-active display of the successful functioning of their tried-and-tested products for delegates to view. SAEEC2012 promises to deliver even more information and developments in the energy efficiency sector. Diarise the 7th Southern African Energy Efficiency Convention (SAEEC2012) at Emperors Palace in Gauteng on 14-15 November 2012.
